Okay, on the same box, I see:

perl5.00503   TT 2.08    normal
perl5.6.0     TT 2.08    normal
perl5.6.1     TT 2.08    normal
perl5.8.0     TT 2.08    eats more ram as time passes
perl5.8.0     TT 2.09    eats more ram as time passes
perl5.9.0[0]  TT 2.09    normal

So I suspect that it's probably something local with my 5.8.0 build,
with a less likely second helping of something fixed in blead.  I'll
see if rebuilding 5.8.0 with similar switches to blead fixes it.
